Stem Cell Research & "extreme right-wing ideology"

Kerry assails Bush's stand on stem-cell research

HAMPTON, N.H. - Sen. John Kerry accused President Bush on Monday of putting "extreme right-wing ideology" ahead of lifesaving scientific potential by restricting research on embryonic stem cells.

Polls show that more than two-thirds of voters support the research, which many scientists believe could help in treating neurological disorders such as Parkinson's along with other diseases, including diabetes.

Kerry seized on the issue in a town-hall forum at a high school here, one of a series of events designed as dress rehearsals for the second presidential debate with Bush on Friday, which will consist of questions from an audience.

"Right now, some of the most pioneering treatments that could transform our lives could be right at our fingertips," Kerry said. "But they're being withheld from people. They remain beyond our reach. ... This president either doesn't see it, or doesn't understand or doesn't care."
