Brownwood Hate Radio Ads & Randy Neugebauer & Charlie Stenholm
Letter To The Editor - Despicable tactics
October 22, 2004
I just heard U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer's ad on Brownwood talk radio and am appalled, but not surprised. The tactics the Lubbock Republican has employed in attacking U.S. Rep. Charlie Stenholm, D-Abilene, remind me of those used in 2002 against moderate Texas Republican legislators.
Of such tactics, former Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Ratliff said: ''This type of hate-mongering is reminiscent of the Nazis; this type of hate-mongering is reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan; this type of hate-mongering is typical of the skinheads; this type of hate-mongering is now being practiced by al-Qaida and the Taliban.''
The Dallas Morning News weighed in with an editorial condemning the tactics as despicable: ''The Free Enterprise Political action committee's attempt to smear some Texas Republicans for supporting a needed hate crimes law deserves the comeuppance it received from acting Lt. Gov. Bill Ratliff and 22 senators.''
So, let me get this straight. Neugebauer wants Central Texans to believe that Stenholm approves of flag burning, removing ''under God'' from the Pledge and is in support of gay marriage?
What Neugebauer is doing is despicable.

Neugebauer should remove his blinkers
August 23, 2005
In a recent article, Congressman Randy Neugebauer responded to a query regarding the conservative nature of Abilene. He cited his experiences in traveling around his district as reinforcing the conservative nature of the area and the citizenry as ''God fearing, love America'' folks. Mr. Neugebauer, not surprisingly, has one of the most conservative voting records in Washington as he votes in lockstep with Tom DeLay. He has voted over and over again for tax cuts aimed principally at the rich, every pork barrel bill that has benefited his wealthy contributors and supporters and against every socially productive piece of legislation.
He has blindly supported a war that is draining one billion dollars a week from the treasury as our government debt soars.
The next time the congressman visits our dear city, I would suggest he observe not only our religiosity and patriotism, but also our failing schools, block after block of crumbling housing, and our empty stores and factories. There are over 17,000 persons and 6,000 families in Abilene living below the poverty level and the median income is a pitiful $34,000. Tens of thousands of us have no health insurance. Services for the handicapped have been decimated by budget cuts.
I would suggest on a future tour of our city Mr. Neugebauer, rather than attending staged events and fund raisers, take time out from his busy schedule to observe our very real plight and meet with those that his votes have most negatively impacted.
